This essay discusses the relationship between method, technique and reflexivity through a personal encounter with methodology. It argues that research cannot be understood merely as the correct application of technical procedures; methodological choices should also be examined through their conceptual, epistemological and positional grounds. Creswell’s systematic approach to research design and Hammersley’s philosophical and reflexive understanding of methodology are brought together to formulate this balanced position. Erdoğan’s article on methodological preferences is then read as a case that illustrates the problems caused by conflating method, technique, design and analysis.
