Abstract

Drawing on participant observation and informal interviews conducted in the Eastern Black Sea Region, this article attempts to answer the question "What kind of work does gratitude do as a national affect produced by hazelnut politics?". The normativity of gratitude -which is constructed with the regulation of the price and guaranteeing the purchase of hazelnuts via Turkish Grain Office (TMO)- as a national affect is explored by focusing on who is "in the mood to be thankful" and "not in the mood to be thankful". In this sense, the study reveals the contagiousness of national affects and their role in organising daily life.
