This paper analyzes the economic and institutional determinants of Türkiye’s transition to renewable energy within the framework of the “green development” discourse by employing historical and empirical approaches. Building on the debates surrounding the Climate Law enacted in 2025, it examines the structural constraints shaping Türkiye’s energy transition. Using annual data for the period 1990–2023, the ARDL bounds testing approach is applied. The results indicate that increases in per capita income significantly promote renewable electricity generation, whereas trade openness does not appear to have a statistically significant effect. Moreover, CO₂ emissions and dependence on fossil fuels exert a negative impact on renewable energy production. Overall, the findings suggest that Türkiye’s renewable energy transition is driven less by market mechanisms and more by state-led policies and institutional structures.
