Abstract

This article focuses on the lumbung practice presented at documenta fifteen, which questions the existing governance structures of art institutions, their power dynamics and their interactions with society. In a context where art institutions are often characterised by hierarchical and centralised structures, collective sharing practices such as lumbung have the potential to make the functioning of art institutions more democratic and participatory. The paper discusses how the practice of lumbung can offer a new perspective on art institutions and challenge existing power dynamics. It considers how this practice can promote models of sustainability and lasting relationships within art institutions and enrich existing institutional structures. The article highlights the necessity for Istanbul’s art scene to consider alternative approaches, such as the practice of lumbung. It is pointed out that such approaches hold considerable potential and the article discusses how these approaches can contribute to the future of art institutions.
